Learning Before I Move

Contributed by Milford Woods

My husband and I are moving to Texas in a few months, so I have been trying to learn all I can. I want to have a smooth transition, and I feel like part of making that happen is knowing what to expect. I am from New York, so it doesn’t get much more different than Texas. I don’t want to seem like a fool when I meet new people so I need to do some serious reading. I want to do some research on the area we are moving to, and have some leads on clubs and activities I can join to make friends. I don’t want to be that woman who depends on her husband for all of her social interaction. I am way too social for that. When I started looking for an apartment I stumbled across a website that said you can shop electricity rates texas. That was an interesting little tidbit I picked up that might help us save some cash when I get there. I’m looking forward to the move, and I can’t wait to get there

Goodbye old friend

Today I was surprised to find out that one of my old and dear friends had died suddenly. I seen him just last weekend walking around and looking healthy. I have no idea what took his life but I will miss him. He was older than me and I remember when I was a young man; fresh away from home, He took a liking to me, a perfect stranger, and took me under his wing and helped me find jobs when I had no work, loaned me money when I was broke and in need, and had me in his home to visit him and his wife and kids many times. Over the years I stopped visiting with my friend and the years passed swiftly by. Upon discovering his death I realize how many years it has been since I was in his home and how much I will miss him and the friendship he always gave to me. I remember swimming and getting sunburned, jumping off a swing into the river, going hunting, playing cards, eating, laughing; so many things, but all many years ago.

Sometimes we take friendships for granted as I have done and we don’t know until it’s too late just how much they mean to us. Troy always made much of me, even when I didn’t feel like much. He wasn’t close to many people, but he wanted to be close to me. I remember once that he had unexpected visitors on a day when he had invited me over to visit long ago. He asked the visitors to leave so they wouldn’t infringe on our time to visit together. Troy worked hard for many years and had just retired a couple of years ago. He looked hale and healthy, and I thought he would be around for a long time. I thought that I had a lot of years to be his friend, when I found the time. Time has run out and now he is gone suddenly, without warning. Goodbye old friend and may God rest your soul, and may you live again someday in a place more special than this.….

Moving To Hartford

I appreciate the guest post, Marian Combs

I am from a small town, so when I moved to Hartford I was intimidated. My hometown was so small we only had one stoplight, and I had to go to a high school 30 miles away. I know that moving to Hartford isn’t moving to the biggest city in the world, but compared to what I was used to it was a metropolis. Everything was a challenge for me at first. I needed help with everything from getting a Connecticut drivers license to connecting my direct TV Hartford. I am lucky that my roommate was so nice and helpful those first few months. She knew how hard it was for me, and instead of making fun of me she was always there to help. She didn’t need to be so good to me, but she was anyways. When I look back at how naïve I was it is crazy. I have matured so much and come such a long way since then. I’m not sure if I got a new roommate that was like me when I first moved here I would have enough patience to help them as much as my roommate helped me.

Coffee tables and so much more

When it's time to replace your furniture, there are so many choices that it can be bewildering at times; both in the selection of furniture, and which retailer you purchase from. It's important to make the right selection on both, because a retailer needs to know their products inside out, and be ready to stand behind what they sell. I recommend that you check out Cymax online. Cymax consists of more than 100 online specialty stores that sell everything from coffee tables to bedroom suites. Their customer representatives are knowledgeable and friendly, and ready to assist you when you give them a call.

Cymax is one of the fastest growing online retailers, commonly called e-tailers, and the reason is because they strive for excellence in every area, including their helpful knowledgeable staff, and also the products they offer. Cymax wants every customer to be satisfied, and they work diligently to assure that they are. They have one of the largest selections of products to choose from on the web today, and it all comes with a full manufacturer's warranty. If you have trouble finding exactly what you want, just send them an email and their friendly staff will try to get it for you. How many retailers offer that much service? Usually what you see is all you get, but not with Cymax. I suggest that you check them out and experience the one on one type of service they offer. Don't settle for less.

Finally, some snow!

Our winter here has been unusually warm and dry, but now that has all changed. We are in the middle of a winter storm that may dump several inches of snow. So far we only have about 1 inch, but there is ice underneath. The roads are pretty slick. I went to work this morning, but we soon decided to leave. I have a 4WD pickup but on the way home the 4WD wouldn’t work. I was worried about making it home, and wouldn’t have if I hadn’t got it to shift into 4WD finally. I had already called my wife and asked her to try to meet me somewhere on our ATV. I was glad that she didn’t have too because that would have been a very cold miserable ride for her. Hopefully our boss won’t make us work Saturday to make up for missing today. Surprisingly, tomorrow is supposed to be up to 50 degrees, and even warmer later in the week. We have a saying here that if you don’t like the weather, just hang around for a few minutes, its sure to change.

Anyway, now I am home safe and sound. I came in the house and got all warm, so now I am sleepy. I may have to settle in for a long winter’s nap. Here I go zzzzzzzzzzzzz.

Guns are fun, but also necessary to our society

I love to target shoot and my wife is getting more and more interested in it too. We went out this evening and spent about 30 minutes shooting. I bought her a small shotgun a few months back, but we found out the hard way that even a small shotgun can have a big recoil. My wife is small and it knocks her back about six inches every time she fires it. Even I get a pretty good wallop from that little gun.

Accurate shooting and the proper handling of guns is something that we should all learn, even if you are not into guns or shooting as a sport. Guns are a tool and sometimes go from being simply fun or useful, to being absolutely necessary. The gun control nuts need to check out the specs before they speak, because in nearly every country that has instituted gun control, the crime rate has soared. “Why”, you ask? It’s simple; crooks have nothing to fear from defenseless people, and they also often have illegal guns. They are already breaking the law anyway so what does it matter? It’s only common sense that tells a criminal that it’s much safer to break into an undefended house than one where the owner is armed and ready. It’s time for us as a nation to stop being helpless victims and depending upon a crooked government that can’t even help themselves, to take care of us. Our country wouldn’t exist in the free state that it is today if it wasn’t for guns, both past and present. Be a citizen, not a subject; Buy a gun and learn to use it!
